Jack Mayo
2019 Inductee
Coach Jack Mayo has been a fixture in the North Georgia coaching ranks from 1968 to 2003. Jack was a scholarship athlete at LaGrange College, where he was a standout in basketball and baseball. He began his coaching and teaching career in 1968 at Newnan County High School, where he served as head basketball coach and middle school football and baseball coach. In 1970, he moved to Chattooga County High School as head basketball coach, head baseball coach, and assistant football coach. During his tenure there, Coach Mayo’s team has made numerous regional appearances winning several and advancing to the state tournament. In 1978, Coach Mayo came to Rossville High School where he served as head Basketball Coach until Rossville closed in 1989. He also served as head baseball coach for three years and assistant football coach upon the consolidation of Rossville and Chattanooga Valley. Coach Mayo moved to Ridgeland High School and served faithfully until 2003 as head track coach, assistant football coach, and social studies department chair. His outstanding efforts as a teacher did not go unnoticed, and he was awarded the prestigious Teacher of the Year honors in 1998. Following his career as a classroom teacher, he continued to serve in the capacity of a guidance counselor until his retirement in 2003. Today, Jack continues to be involved in our community. He can’t go anywhere, and I mean anywhere where he wont hear “Hey Coach Mayo” from a former student. To say that he is beloved is an understatement. Jack was married to the lovely Brenda Goodroe Mayo for 51 years and he is the proud father of three beautiful children, Melissa, Joy, and Jay. He is the proud grandfather of six beautiful grandchildren and the proud great-grandfather of one great-grandchild.
