Mark Mariakis
2023 Inductee
Coach Mark Mariakis didn't just coach teams; he transformed a program. Arriving at Ridgeland with a mere 17 players, he forged a powerhouse, consistently delivering success, including eight seasons with at least seven wins in his 11-year tenure. He etched his name in Ridgeland history by guiding the Panthers to their first-ever region title, a feat he repeated three more times, culminating in the unforgettable 2012 state runner-up finish in GHSA Class AAAA. That remarkable season earned him the prestigious title of Coach of the Year from The Associated Press, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association.
Beyond the trophies and accolades, Coach Mariakis's legacy lies in the lives he touched. He built a program that routinely boasted over 100 players, sending 31 athletes to college on scholarships. He demonstrated a profound commitment to his players' futures, implementing an academic plan that dramatically improved graduation rates, particularly for Black students, a testament to his dedication to their holistic development.
We honor Coach Mark Mariakis, a true architect of Ridgeland athletics, a man whose vision, dedication, and unwavering commitment have left an enduring legacy. Please join us in welcoming him to the Ridgeland High School Athletics Hall of Fame.
